Kellyn has been saving since October for her first American Girl Doll. Well, on pay day last week she finally had her half of the money needed to purchase it. I told her that if she could earn half the cost then I would match it. I have to admit that I came close to caving and buying it for her at Christmas time. Max even caught me looking at dolls on line to buy. She was telling everyone that Santa would bring her an American Girl Doll and it broke my heart to think of Santa letting her down or worse, her parents letting her down. However, I stood strong...mostly because we flat out did not have the money, but also because I knew she would take better care of it and appreciate it much more if she earned it herself. I think that sometimes having a lot of money can get in the way of teaching your children valuable life long lessons. Lucky for our children we don't have that problem and they will reap the benefit of learning how to manage money. :)
On Monday after school (she gets out at 1:00) we went to the American Girl Doll Store.
The pride on her face as she handed over her hard earned money was priceless. Thank you Dave Ramsey, Financial Peace Jr.
I had been trying to subtly talk her into getting one of the big girl dolls that you usually think about when you hear American Girl Doll, but she didn't want one of those. Even though all of her friends have one she was not going to give into peer pressure. She wanted the Bitty Baby. It doesn't mater to her if she is the only one with one. She said she will just play baby while her friends' dolls can be the big sisters.
After the big purchase we headed upstairs for lunch at the American Girl Doll Store.
She had saved a little extra money to have enough to buy the Special Day Gown in addition to the Baby Starter Kit which came with 2 outfits, a blanket, bottle, and bear. As soon as we got upstairs she changed her clothes.
(I love my new camera)
Lunch with her best friend, Kylie, and their American Girl Dolls.
Kylie's mom and I have known each other since junior high, were cheerleaders together in high school and were pregnant with the girls together.
(It was fun for Jennifer and I to get to chat while the girl played with their dolls. We also got to see Kylie's new baby sister, tiny baby Clacie!)
Another wardrobe change for the baby before we left.
Back home showing off the new baby and gear to Mimi and Rhett and Daddy.
Look how much she loves this baby doll. She looks at it so lovingly. It took her 7 months to earn the money, but it seems as though she thinks it was worth it.
She said she is saving for a big girl doll next.
