Coach Max and Rhett the Baller

Rhett's friend, Calvin, had signed up to play basketball this summer in Highland Village and since the big kids didn't play basketball this winter like they usually do he said he wanted to do it. Kellyn would have, but her ankle still hurt for a trampoline injury. So to get a discount on registration Max signed up to be an Assistant Coach. When the season started the Head Coach email him and introduced him as the assistant coach. However, the very next day the league director called Max and told him that another head coach was unexpectedly called away on business and wanted to know if Max would be willing to be the Head Coach of that team. Max reluctantly agreed seeing as how he played baseball not basketball. Well there was a lot to learn for both Max and Rhett. Rhett isn't all that competitive and wasn't really al that into basketball. He was just happy to get a jersey and run up and down the court with his friend and get a trophy at the end of the season. Max on the other hand took his job very seriously and so did some of the other parents. I wasn't able to take any pictures during any of the games because I had a baby and a toddler with me. After trying to manage them both during the 1st game and watch my child play I decided it was easier if we just show up at half time and only have to stay 30 minutes as opposed to an entire hour.

Well, the first 2 games went fine, then we had to miss the 3rd game because we went to the Peach Festival in Weatherford. A new player joined our team and his father and the dad that was originally supposed to be the coach coached the game together in Max's absence. Then on the 4th game Max was trying to coach and these 2 dads stood up and coached with him. Max didn't like it, but would never say anything because he is so confrontational avoidance. We found out that the new player is fantastic. Our best player! Turns out his dad played basketball for UNT and his older brother is a star basketball player at this high school so he and this new player is player basketball for another league as well. He is in 1st grade.

The last 3 games the other 2 dads sat down and Max coached alone just fine. We made it to the playoffs and played 2 games back to back early that morning. The first game was against an easy team and we were beating them real bad so Max decided to only play his not so good players (which included Rhett) so he didn't run the score up on the other team and then play his really great players in the 2nd game against the tougher team. In his mind this gave everyone equal playing time. However, this is against the rules and the parents called him on it. During the first game the dad of the awesome new player yelled at Max infront of everyone and pulled his son out of the game because he wasn't getting much playing time and left a little after half time. The original coach ran after him and talked him in to coming back then the original coach's wife yelled at Max during the first game. UGH! It's basketball people. Max was so mad, but he never shows it. Then during the 2nd game the awesome new kid's dad practically coached from the sidelines. He was yelling at each kid and telling them what to do and what not to do while Max was across the court trying to coach as well. The players got so confused they didn't know who to look at or who to listen to. Max was pissed and wanted to tell that dad off, but of course didn't. He thought about writing him an email telling him how un-coachable his kid was and what a tragedy that was going to be plus a few more choice words, but luckily I talked him out of doing that. That dad had no intention of changing. I doubt Max was the only coach he was disrespectful too. Max said he wished he had told the guy off, but didn't want to cause a scene like his dad used to do to him during baseball games. So glad he didn't.
Regardless, we won our bracket fair and square!
But Max will never coach basketball again and we will never be in that unorganized league again.

The kid with the trophy over his head was our star player and his dad was the one who tried to out-coach Max.

Kellyn helped me a lot with the little ones so I could watch bits and pieces of games. And this is our new double stroller. It's a Joovy. I love it!

That night to celebrate this horrible experience being over we all went to dinner a Jake's Burgers across the street from our house and ate on the patio which has a splash pad right next to it. Such a fun night. I always want to remember them this fun and carefree on a lovely summer evening.
